Tactical Strength Challenge

70′s Big TSC

A lot of you need to sack up and compete in something soon. f you’re still on the fence, you are invited required to participate in the Tactical Strength Challenge this April.
Results will be submitted between March 25 and will end Sunday night, April 17 (there will be a sticky post up).

The events are simple.

1. Max deadlift. You get three attempts to find your max pull. Do it meet-style. If you make an “AC-jump” between your first and second attempt, there is no going back.

2. Max pullups. Dead hangs. No chinning (palms must face away), and absolutely no kipping. Kippers will be shot, killed, and then banned from posting here.

3. 5 min Kettlebell snatch test. You may set the weight down or switch hands as necessary. If you absolutely can’t find a kettlebell, use an equivalent dumbbell and mention that in your results.

The 3 major divisions are as follows:
Men’s Elite: 10kg weighted pullups, 32kg kettlebell (70lb DB)
Men’s Open: BW pullups, 24kg kettlebell (55lb DB)
You must make a minimum of one deadlift, pullup and snatch or you score 0 in the above divisions.
Women’s Open: BW pullups, 16kg kettlebell (35lb DB)

It’s worth noting that in the heaviest division, strong adult males have a significant advantage because pullup and snatch reps will be lower, thus deadlift contributes more of the final score. Everyone is encouraged to enter the hardest division they can complete. Novice and masters divisions are also available. Full rules and scoring are here.

Perform the 3 events in one session, and rest at least 15 minutes between each, even more if you have time. Perform the TSC and post your results by April 17 on the results sticky which will be up by the end of March. Get your friends that lift to complete the TSC with you and post their results with yours. If you don’t have kettlebells, dumbbells or cool friends there is a list of locations around the world that might be hosting a TSC on April 9. If one’s near you make sure to contact them ahead of time to confirm they’re still on for spring. They’re required to be free and this is a great way to meet lifters in your area and test the waters of competition.

  1. First.

Also, sadly, I won’t be able to compete in the TSC this time around, because I will be training for an actual sport (my next PL meet after the one this coming Sunday).

  2. Thanks for posting this, I plan on doing it and hopefully getting others involved as well.

Have you sold your bar and bumpers yet?

    I have not.

  3. This is awesome. I’ve got a powerlifting meet on April 16 so I’ll use that for my deadlift number and I’ll do the pull ups and (dumbell) snatches the week before.

Speaking of awesome, I am now an adult male. This week I weighed in at 200 lbs or slightly over for four consecutive days. This especially important because I just bought my girlfriend the “I <3 70s Big Guys" shirt. I'm going to maintain here and then just lose the 2 lbs right before the meet.

This is in regards to yesterday’s post/responses, but I wasn’t sure if you go back and read responses the day after, so I figured I’d post it here. Thanks for the honest advice and everything, I really appreciate it. By BF% is probably is somewhere in the low teens (maybe 12-13% if I had to guess), so it’s at a pretty “athletic” level (somewhere I’m happy with it). I will certainly try messing with different variables in my diet and will report back…it’s strange to say, but I honestly believe that sleep is my biggest hurdle in getting stronger (a GOOD weeknight for me would be ~5 hours).

However, can you please explain this sentence: “In order to recover, an 8 hour window won’t be enough time to get the desired amount of food in, especially since the calories are more on the quality side compared to when I was gaining.”

    Again, thanks for the advice.

    @Antigen (also from yesterday)

10-12 hours regularly?! No wonder you’re moving the amount of weight you’re moving! Time to more than double my weeknight sleeping…

For the record, the “trim some extra BF” was what I did before…I’m comfortable with where my BF is now. And the deli sandwich would refer to something I would make the night before, seeing as (with a few exceptions) I have to wolf down my food before gym due to not having a lunch period.

    @StillGrowing

What world record? Good luck man!

  5. @domjo

WPC 90kg Raw under 19, I’d like to get Squat Bench Deadlift and Total. Squat is already there, Deadlift is close, but the Bench is quite a ways away. Might do the Westside 30lb in 30 days if it comes down to it.

  6. Good to see a lot of interest!

@Maslow via TSC Rules: The contest must be held on a single day. The events must be contested in the order of deadlift, pullups, snatches. With a minimum of 15 minutes rest taken between events.

So perform your pullups and snatches after the meet is over and your results will be valid. (And awesome for having DL’d in a different sport)

@StillGrowing It would be fun and it’s a bummer it won’t fit in your training. What if the DLs were sub max attempts?

  7. Antigen and/or ThunderThighs:

Recall from Thunder’s meet write-up her mentioning beef liver. How do you cook yours? I’m curious to try it, not yet having discovered it’s “incredible, magical strength gaining powers”

And I’m going to try and bust this TSC out this time around. probably 2 weeks or so after my meet.

  8. @StillGrowing

That’s amazing, I’ll definitely be pulling for you. What are the Squat/Bench/DL records?

And how long have you been training for? Are you American?

  9. Anyone in Baltimore traveling to Brookeville? I’m willing to pay gas/food for a lift. Otherwise, I’d love to know of any meets around the Baltimore area during that time/later in May. Haven’t competed before.

Cook it in bacon fat quickly on medium low to medium heat, just a couple minutes per side since the slabs are so thin. Overcooking it makes it tough. Eat it with the bacon if you don’t like the taste.

  12. Was hoping there would be a post on TSC as i missed it last time out.
Looking now to buy the 24kg kettlebell. Been working on one armed snatch but with dumbbells for Tabatas and on the minute stuff.
DL and snatches will be good. Still under 10 max on pullups though (BW ~250)
Going to get my brother who is a cop to compete with me. He can do about 30 pullups but i’ll smoke him in the deads.

  13. @Rachel and other ladies
There is no minimum number of strict pullups required to get a score for the women’s division.

The difference between 0 and 1 has the same impact on the score as 14 more lbs on deadlift and 6 more snatches. So anybody who thinks this looks like fun should try it strict PU or not.

@CBOS dear god I have to beat 30 pullups? Make sure he goes full extension to chin over bar each rep.

  14. This looks like fun! I am in! I am training to be in a strongman comp this summer, so this will be a good lead up for that.

Not sure how official my results will be, as I will just be doing this at my home gym…

  15. Sounds good, I’m in.

I haven’t done a TSC in years but i’m just about to start a month of snatch training and this will be a good test at the end.

  16. I did the Tactical Strength Challenge in the Men’s Elite division since it was the “hardest division” that I could complete. I weighed in at 191.8 lbs.

    Deadlift: 530 lbs
    Pull Ups(BW + 10kg): 13 reps
70 lbs DB snatch: 60 reps in 5:00
