California Hangover
We got back late Monday night from doing a barbell seminar in Huntington Beach, CA. I would not advise anyone visiting or continuing to live in that state. To California residents: I’m sorry I’m not sorry. More on the trip tomorrow…
You may remember that on Friday, I mentioned that AC was going to compete in a USAPL meet. He did 70’s Big justice going 7 for 9, and I’m proud of him.
Competing in the 220 lb class…
Body weight: 204 (on their scale, he was around 208-209 on his scale)
Squat: 529 (raw state record)
Bench: 368 (raw state record
Deadlift: 568
AC’s Powerlifting Meet from A.C. on Vimeo.
Edit: AC went 7 of 9. I typed it wrong last night for some reason. I was in a hurry.

AC, I don”t care if you are 5 years younger than me, you”re my hero.
Someone get this kid his own TV show, too…
November 24th, 2009 at 12:18 am
So…it turns out this A.C. character is somewhat strong.
November 24th, 2009 at 1:08 am
beastly
November 24th, 2009 at 1:45 am
I´m in complete agreement with Q…
Just a quick question for A.C.:
Why did wrap your thumbs around the bar in the second and third squat attempt? Was it because of the rules?
November 24th, 2009 at 2:03 am
…freak
nice job, AC, you”re a manimal.
November 24th, 2009 at 5:47 am
the karate kid song rocked.

November 24th, 2009 at 7:08 am

November 24th, 2009 at 8:16 am
That was a lot of fun. Well done, sir.
November 24th, 2009 at 8:20 am

November 24th, 2009 at 8:38 am

November 24th, 2009 at 8:45 am

Nice job AC- solid effort, solid. Good job on the video edit too…
November 24th, 2009 at 9:05 am
Y”all beat me to the Karate Kid references
Nice lifting man!
Is locking out always the sticking point on your deads? You get the wieght halfway sooo easy!
November 24th, 2009 at 9:06 am
A.C. you are a monster. I can t believe you are only 204, you should eat more, try for the high side of your weight class.
And I have to agree with Justin on this one. I have been to California a few times, none of them pleasant.
November 24th, 2009 at 9:11 am
AC, great enthusiasm before and after each lift. It is great watching some of the other spectators and competitors faces. They”re all kind of like “oh *#%$!”
That was awesome to watch. Makes me want to compete.
November 24th, 2009 at 9:37 am
Sometimes I get a boner when looking at A.C.”s lifts- not necessarily AC because he”s an ugly bastard, but his lifts.
Anyways PR Friday, I guess.
Bench-215x5x3
Squat-305x5x3
Press 120x5x3
Clean- 170x5x3 (super weak here).
November 24th, 2009 at 9:54 am
congrats AC, good call on the post competition chinese food/COD.
November 24th, 2009 at 10:06 am
Solid, man.
November 24th, 2009 at 10:18 am
Epic lifting, A.C.
I”m on a mission to squat more than I can bench by next summer. Currently squat max 245…bench 315. Tooth pick legs.
November 24th, 2009 at 10:21 am
Dirk- Yeah a judge came up to me and said I have to wrap my thumbs, even though two other guys werent doing it. It was kinda bs.
Bflatsax- Yeah the guy that beat me squatted like 6 and benched 450, my deadlift was higher though.
Skinny99- I think at that point in the meet I was exhausted so sticking somewhere was bound to happen.
November 24th, 2009 at 10:32 am
If California isn”t the best place to live then why do I live here?
SoCal has the best traffic, smog, and mexican food I have ever experienced.
November 24th, 2009 at 10:42 am
AC you are my hero. Impressive lifts man, and you couldn”t have picked a better song for this.
November 24th, 2009 at 11:29 am
Congrats AC – kick Ass lifts! and…70s Big satin jacket?!?!
November 24th, 2009 at 11:37 am
What were the other lifts at this meet?
AC nice work brah, You are a zombie-hunting general.
November 24th, 2009 at 11:48 am
AC nice work on the meatballs they look good, I am surprised you only weigh 204 with food like that.
Also nice work with the lifts and music selection. What is the actual name of that song so I can look it up online? I only know it as the the Karate kid song
November 24th, 2009 at 11:48 am
absolutely inspirational shit dude
November 24th, 2009 at 11:53 am
The song name is “You”re the Best”
November 24th, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Congrats AC! All those lifts are stronger than mine, and I””ll be in the 275 class for my first USAPL meet! Doh. Luckily the state records here are lower. I””m more than a bit worried about the thumbs around the bar on squats now. I hadn””t seen that anywhere in the rules, and it will seriously throw me off. Guess I should practice it just in case.
Johnny Pain told me that this was not in the rules (USAPL uses IPF rules), and basically they were wrong. Look into it. Get a rule book.

Ridiculous work AC. You are my motivation.
November 24th, 2009 at 5:28 pm
Thanks AC. This video will get me in the weightroom tonight!!!
November 24th, 2009 at 5:33 pm
the thumbnail looks like I have a raging mega-huge boner.
I’m not convinced you don’t.
–Justin
November 24th, 2009 at 5:45 pm
On another note the Iron Maiden shirt is F*&ing great! May I request your next video have some classic Maiden in it? If you could get Eddie to make an appearence as well I would be very grateful!
November 24th, 2009 at 6:03 pm
Congratulations
November 24th, 2009 at 6:41 pm
A.C. gosh, I hate you.
November 24th, 2009 at 7:15 pm
AC wait, do you mean that the thumbnail isn”t your mega huge rod? That”s disappointing & I feel like I”ve been deceived.
November 24th, 2009 at 7:47 pm
How””d you get a new state record when the guy who came first lifted more than you?
It is because AC was lifting raw, and his records were set in that category. My understanding is that the 1st place winner was not raw (verifying this…).

Go Pats!
November 24th, 2009 at 8:49 pm
@ MassBuilder:
You from MA?
November 24th, 2009 at 11:01 pm
Raw means all you are using is a belt, right? No wraps, straps, suits, etc.?
Yes. I do not know all of the little nuances in different federations, though. I have heard that some allow knee wraps with the belt. I will get someone to elaborate.
–Justin
November 25th, 2009 at 9:59 am
Raw in the USAPL is BELT and KNEE SLEEVES (no wraps).
November 25th, 2009 at 10:00 am
Both are optional.
November 25th, 2009 at 10:08 am
Very impressive. AC- just wondering, did you widen your squat stance for the meet, or use your normal training stance?
Justin- can you dub over the video to say “I’m just really nervous and excited to [dance]?”
November 25th, 2009 at 1:36 pm
tdwaffle15-
I used my regular training stance. Surprisingly most people there actually followed how Rippetoe teaches.
November 25th, 2009 at 7:01 pm
@ Paul Sousa
Yeah, Livin in Haverhill
November 25th, 2009 at 10:03 pm
MassBuilder – I”m in Weymouth. Tought to find a gym focused on strength around here. I have a friend in Wakefield who I am trying to have check out Olympia Barbell. Can”t find any place any closer to me.
November 26th, 2009 at 3:31 am
I”ve got nothing on AC but I also had my first Powerlifting comp on Sunday. It was a PA(Powerlifting Australia) comp, they”re IPF affiliated.

Love the karate kid theme…makes me want to eat big and lift big. This site is a blessing, even to us little aspiring to be 70s big. Gitsum.

To use the Karate Kid theme song with such panache…Bravo my friend. Bravo. Inspirational
